Updating my Facebook status brought on a desire to acknowledge and comment on the importance of today. As if Martin Luther King's legacy is not reason enough, there is more thought behind this posting. Who would've known that his speech "I Have A Dream" would produce some of the most profound quotes and thought provoking comments that are socially relevant STILL in 2010.
In no attempt to change the focus of his words, I couldn't help but realize that this speech is not just about ending discrimination against black Americans, but solidifying equal rights to everyone, to every minority. Easily, the references to "blacks" and "African-Americans" can be replaced with "homosexuals" or "gays" and not lose its anti-discrimination message in the least. The words that ask for equal rights for all Americans are the same no matter what social class or section of society they are speaking on behalf of. No American should be denied the rights that other Americans are privileged to because they are a minority.
Do you know what I dream of? I dream of a day when I can listen to Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech and revel in the fact that his dream is now my reality. That I am judged not by the color of my skin, but by the content of my character. However, for now, it's not a reality, but the same dream that I share with Martin Luther King.
